Life In Beaufort, SC

March 28th, 2009 8:45 AM

As every other Beaufort SC Realtor, I have an endless stream of hysterical, comical, and even frightening conversation starters. Thanks to my day to day experiences,  I am never without a good story.

In seven years I have been shocked, touched, terrified, and "weirded-out", but NEVER, EVER have I come across the pure ignorance that sached into my life yesterday.

My beautiful mother, bless her southern heart, always told me to hold my tongue. Thank goodness my grandmother was standing right behind her telling me to speak my mind.

I was showing property yesterday to a client that once made the comment that they chose me based on my "southern personality". I just thought maybe they liked the way I talked.

I am going to attempt to explain the events of the day without writing a novel. A novel it so deserves, however my keyboard can't take the fury from my fingertips much longer.

As we are making our way into one of the homes a spirited little fella from next door came running up to welcome us. He couldn't have been more than 5 or 6 years old. Barefoot, smiling, and extremely excited he introduced himself. He was absolutely precious.

Funny, but at the time I thought to myself, what a great example of the neighborhood.

This was right about lunch time and we had agreed to stop by on of my favorite Beaufort cafes for a quick bite before continuing on with the rest of the homes.

As we are sitting there, enjoying the view that only Beaufort can offer, it happened. In the midst of reviewing the homes we had seen, the gentleman (I am saying that only because my mom may read this) said..

"How about you just show us the homes that reflect the type of neighbors that YOU and I would enjoy."

I paused for a moment, put my sweet tea down gingerly, politely and articulately said, "huh?

Possibly I misunderstood him due to my southern ears desperately trying to adjust to his thick northern accent. I mean, it happens right?

He went on to tell me that he was "turned off" by the "type" of little boy that approached us at the last home.

Ok grandma, I know you are listening, this one's for you.

"Sir, I appreciate the opportunity to work for you and your lovely wife. It has been a most enlightening morning. I am thankful we chose this particular restaurant as it is within a comfortable walking distance to your hotel. Now, when you get back to your hotel, it is my sincere hopes that you find your car and it safely transports you back to whatever rock you crawled out from."

I excused myself, grabbed my sweet tea, found our server and paid the bill. I left.

As I am storming (yep that means walking with an angry purpose), down the sidewalk to my car a gentleman (I actually mean it this time) calls after me. He overheard my comments to my EX-CLIENTS.

Long story short, he is in Land Acquisition. I am meeting with him and his 9 member investment group early next week.

Apparently, he likes my "way of handling &%*$ heads."
