Education
There is one public school in Port Royal, Port Royal Elementary. Students continue on to middle and high school in other Beaufort County School District Schools. Beaufort Middle School and Beaufort High School are both close to the town in neighboring Beaufort. Additionally, Port Royal has the Praise Christian Academy, a pre-kindergarten through 12th grade private school. Students interested in attaining higher education locally can find it in Beaufort through one of three institutions: the University of South Carolina Beaufort, the Technical College of the Lowcountry (Beaufort Campus), or Clemson University's extension office which offers ecological and agricultural programs.
Recreation
Port Royals unique personality shines through in its community beach and boardwalk. The boardwalk is a popular place for sightseeing and walking as well as being an opportune fishing spot. The town features an observation tower at which people can watch all types of birds and even dolphins. People can find leisure at The Sands Beach or Live Oaks Park, which has a lighted skate park and a covered oyster shed, as well as an impressive playground area.
The town has a 5-mile trail for jogging and biking, including an observation deck. Residents can enjoy Farmers' Markets at the Naval Heritage Park throughout the week. The town has charming, locally-owned shops with a varied fare. Places of interest include the Lowcountry Estuarium, the Union Church (a historic church with a museum) and Ft. Frederick, built by the British in the 18th-century.
Special Events
Port Royal hosts a local Independence Day celebration yearly. Held in the town, there are activities for the family, entertainment and various foods and drinks. Parris Island and Port Royal put on a dual fireworks display to cap off the event. Additionally, in late April, Port Royal holds the Soft Shell Crab Festival. This event celebrates the short soft shell crab season at that time.
